In response to Vietnam's ascendancy as the top durian exporter to China, Thai exporters and government agencies are urged to intensify efforts to bolster durian exports to the Chinese market.
Vietnam has overtaken Thailand as the leading exporter of the revered "king of fruits" to China, claiming a significant market share. According to a report by the Vietnamese newspaper Dan Viet, Vietnam's share of the Chinese durian market surged to 57% in January and February, compared to 32% in the previous year.
During the first two months of this year, China imported a substantial 53,110 tons of durians valued at US$283.6 million. Thailand, now the second-largest exporter, shipped 19,016 tons worth $120.3 million to China during the same period.
Dan Viet attributes Vietnam's success partly to its ability to harvest durians year-round, particularly during seasons when Thai durians are not readily available. Additionally, Vietnam offers competitive prices, with durians priced at US$4.916 per ton, cheaper than Thailand's US$6.133 per ton. Proximity to China enables swift exports, further enhancing Vietnam's competitive edge.
This development echoes the findings of the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion, which reported last year that Vietnam had surpassed Thailand as China's primary durian supplier. China's imports of durians surged to 120,000 tons in October last year, a substantial increase compared to the previous year. Notably, China's imports from Vietnam surged while imports from Thailand declined.
Vietnam exported a staggering 452,000 tons of durians worth $1.94 billion to China in the first ten months of last year, primarily consisting of fresh durians. Thailand, on the other hand, enjoys the advantage of exporting fresh, frozen, and processed durians to China.
However, the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion cautioned that Vietnam's export volume could further increase if China permits the export of frozen durians.
In light of these developments, durian exporters and government agencies are urged to collaborate on strategies to bolster exports and safeguard Thailand's market share in China.
