China and the European Union (EU) have signaled their commitment to upholding free trade and multilateralism, according to statements made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his visit to Spain. Wang emphasized China's willingness to collaborate with the EU in fostering a balanced and orderly multi-polar world, as well as promoting inclusive economic globalization.
Acknowledging the EU's significance in the multi-polar landscape, Wang expressed China's support for European integration and the EU's pursuit of strategic autonomy. He highlighted the importance of solidarity and cooperation between China and the EU, emphasizing that such collaboration would prevent bloc confrontation.
Wang's remarks were made during meetings with Spanish leaders, including the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister, as well as Spain's King Felipe VI. He emphasized China's readiness to engage in high-level exchanges with Spain and to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation based on shared development strategies.
The EU has recently outlined plans aimed at bolstering its economic security, including closer scrutiny of foreign investments and more coordinated controls on technology exports, particularly concerning rivals such as China. These measures come in response to various challenges highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's actions in Ukraine, cyber and infrastructure attacks, and heightened geopolitical tensions.
