In a recent development, the Indian government has amended its ban on onion exports, allowing the shipment of 64,400 tonnes to the UAE and Bangladesh. A senior official from the federal ministry of commerce confirmed this decision, stating that it was made at the "request of friendly countries."
The ban on onion exports was initially imposed by India's federal government in December 2023 to address domestic market demands. However, in response to requests from key trading partners, the government has now lifted the ban, permitting exports to selected countries.
According to notifications issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the commerce ministry, Bangladesh will receive 50,000 tonnes of onions, while the UAE will receive 14,400 tonnes. Additionally, a maximum limit of 3,600 tonnes over three months has been imposed for exports to the UAE.
This decision reflects India's commitment to fostering strong trade relations with its neighboring countries and supporting global trade partnerships. By lifting the ban on onion exports, India aims to meet the demands of its domestic market while also contributing to the economic growth of Bangladesh and the UAE.
