In a recent update, Ukraine reports that its newly established Black Sea shipping corridor, operational since August, has witnessed significant activity, underscoring its importance in the region's trade landscape. According to information from the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, a senior government official shared the latest developments.
Since its inception, a total of 151 ships have utilized the corridor, highlighting its growing prominence as a crucial trade route. Notably, these vessels have collectively transported an impressive 4.4 million metric tons of cargo, with a substantial portion—3.2 million tons—comprising grain shipments. This achievement underscores Ukraine's pivotal role in global grain production and exportation.
The establishment of this corridor became a necessity after a U.N.-backed agreement guaranteeing safe passage for Ukrainian grain exports via the Black Sea collapsed in July, following Russia's withdrawal. In response, Ukraine swiftly acted to create what they termed a "humanitarian corridor" that runs along the western Black Sea coast, adjacent to Romania and Bulgaria.
Yuriy Vaskov, the deputy minister for renovation and infrastructure, revealed that the corridor is currently bustling with activity. Presently, 30 ships are loading at Ukrainian ports, signifying the continuous flow of trade through this essential route. Among these vessels, 22 are gearing up to transport a substantial 700,000 tons of grain, while an additional eight ships are preparing to ferry 500,000 tons of diverse cargo.
