The fifth edition of Trade and Environment Week, set to take place from October 7-11, 2024, at the World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarters in Geneva and online, promises to be a key platform for advancing sustainability through global trade. With the theme “Trade for Clean Energy Transition for All,” this event highlights how international trade can play a pivotal role in driving clean energy solutions and inclusive growth.
One of the central features of the week is a high-level event that will unite leaders from the WTO, the International Renewable Energy Agency, and other global organizations to discuss the critical role of trade in supporting the clean energy transition. Attendees will include prominent figures such as WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization. Together, they will explore how international trade policies can be leveraged to foster innovation, sustainability, and economic growth for all nations.
In addition to the high-level event, the week will include 15 side events organized by WTO members, addressing a wide range of trade-environment topics, including plastics pollution, sustainable agriculture, and trade-related climate measures. These sessions will showcase practical ideas on how global trade can align with environmental goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that economic growth and sustainability go hand in hand.
The event will also feature a 'book talk' by Chris Goodall, author of Possible: Ways to Net Zero, and an art exhibition celebrating innovative sustainability efforts. The exhibition will display sustainable products and creative artworks that highlight the potential of trade to support circular economies and environmentally friendly practices across the globe.
Trade and Environment Week 2024 will bring together global leaders, business representatives, experts, and civil society to exchange actionable insights on how trade can be a powerful driver for a cleaner, greener world. The event is open to the public, with live webcasts and in-person participation.
