Australian almond exporters are experiencing a banner year, fueled by robust demand from China and a bountiful harvest. In July 2024, almond exports soared by an impressive 35.3% year-on-year, reaching a record 20,139 metric tons for the month. Overall shipments, including domestic and international sales, also saw significant growth of 33.8%, totaling 22,450 metric tons.
The surge in exports to China has been particularly noteworthy, with shipments hitting 12,055 metric tons in July—an astounding 113.4% increase compared to the previous year. This remarkable demand underscores Australia’s strong position in the global almond market. While some countries have reported declines in imports, Australia continues to thrive, highlighting its competitiveness in agricultural trade.
From March to July 2024, the country shipped a total of 70,990 metric tons of almonds, reflecting a 16.2% increase from last year. The export volume rose by 19.2% to 60,803 metric tons, with China emerging as the largest recipient, showcasing the strength of Australia’s agricultural sector.
Although the Almond Board of Australia has noted a slowdown in new acreage development due to rising production costs and lower yields, the existing 22 million almond trees cultivated across 64,192 hectares are well-positioned to support continued export growth. The current crop is estimated at 164,700 metric tons, setting the stage for a prosperous future in almond trade.
