The Philippines is on track to expand its presence in global trade, with the country’s creative exports showing strong potential for growth. As global demand for creative goods and services continues to rise, the Philippines is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the creative sector.
In celebration of Philippine Creative Industries Month 2024, industry leaders highlighted the country's impressive progress in creative goods exports. According to the Global Innovation Index 2023, the Philippines ranks 10th in creative exports within ASEAN and 56th among 132 economies globally. These figures demonstrate the Philippines’ growing role as a key player in the international creative market.
Industry experts believe the Philippines can strengthen its leadership position further by focusing on its strengths, such as the use of indigenous materials in creative industries. Sustainable and culturally rich resources, including wood, bamboo, rattan, and leather, offer unique opportunities to craft distinctive products for global markets. These materials not only showcase traditional craftsmanship but also open doors for innovation in furniture and fashion design, making Filipino creativity a force to be reckoned with worldwide.
Creative industries in the Philippines are categorized into four main clusters: creative goods, entertainment and media, digital creative services, and creative tourism. Each of these sectors provides substantial contributions to the country’s economy. The entertainment and media sector alone contributes significantly to the country’s gross value added (GVA), while providing employment for hundreds of thousands of Filipinos.
The Philippines has also emerged as a leading exporter of creative services, ranking fourth globally, behind major players in Asia. In 2022, creative services accounted for 2.3% of the country’s total exports, signaling the importance of this growing sector to international trade.
Creative tourism is another promising area, as the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage and vibrant creative communities attract international visitors. Cultural festivals, heritage sites, and culinary experiences are just some of the attractions that contribute to the country’s thriving creative tourism sector. This growing industry not only strengthens the Philippines’ position as a top creative destination but also provides millions of jobs to locals.
Looking ahead, continued investment in creative industries will further bolster the Philippines’ trade potential. By fostering innovation, supporting creative talent, and connecting the creative sector with global markets, the Philippines is set to enhance its role as a global leader in creative exports and services.
