Chile is making significant strides in expanding its fruit exports to Asian markets. Over the past week, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and Frutas de Chile have been engaging with phytosanitary authorities from Japan, Korea, and China to prepare for the 2024-2025 fruit export season. The delegation, led by SAG’s national director José Guajardo, includes professionals from SAG and representatives from the private sector. Their discussions focused on the advancements and phytosanitary requirements necessary for exporting Chilean products, such as apples, to these Asian markets.
In Japan, the talks centered on facilitating the entry of Chilean apples and addressing measures against fruit fly outbreaks. One of the key points was the potential implementation of cold treatment in transit for all fruits authorized to enter Japan from regulated areas. Additionally, the delegation explored the introduction of electronic phytosanitary certificates (e-Phytos) by Japan, aiming to streamline and secure the export process.
In South Korea, the discussions highlighted the progress toward opening the market to new fruits. This included planning a visit by experts from the Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) to Chile to agree on pest mitigation measures. The successful implementation of an electronic phytosanitary certificate pilot program between Chile and South Korea was also a focal point, reflecting both countries' commitment to enhancing trade efficiency.
Meetings with the Chilean ambassadors to Japan and South Korea emphasized the importance of Chile's food presence at the Osaka Expo 2024. Additionally, they discussed the ongoing evolution of talks to update the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Korea, underlining the broader strategic importance of these engagements.
During the 2023-2024 season, Chile exported over 32,000 tons of fresh fruits to Japan, with lemons, table grapes, and kiwis being the main products. Similarly, more than 33,000 tons were shipped to South Korea, led by table grapes and cherries. These meetings are pivotal in strengthening the presence of Chilean fruits in Asian markets and improving conditions for the upcoming export season.
