A major new development has been unveiled in Romania, strengthening the country’s position as a vital hub of European trade and fostering economic growth across the region.
Constanta, the largest container port on the Black Sea, now features two significant additions: a 5-hectare project cargo terminal for heavy, large, and complex cargo, and a new RoRo terminal designed to handle up to 80,000 vehicles annually at its peak. Additionally, an 8-hectare intermodal logistics hub has been inaugurated in Aiud, situated in Romania’s industrial heartland, connecting rail and road networks.
An additional $54 million will be invested in a multi-transport platform in Constanta, set to open in 2025. These new facilities are set to enhance the connectivity of existing sea, rail, barge, and truck services throughout Romania, improving the flow of goods between mainland Europe and the Black, North, and Adriatic Seas.
These infrastructure developments were announced during the 20th anniversary of investment in Romania, the first European country where operations were expanded. Over the past two decades, Romania has grown significantly, becoming Eastern Europe’s second-largest economy.
A senior executive, who began his career as manager for Constanta in 2004, remarked, “Romania is a dynamic economy, well-positioned to benefit from the rise in nearshoring and manufacturing. We are excited to build on our long-standing relationship with Romania and leverage our latest investments to support its increasing role in regional trade and economic growth.”
Another senior executive added, “Our latest investments in Romania will boost cargo flows by approximately 2 million tonnes per annum. With this investment, the port in Constanta will significantly enhance its status as a crucial container and RoRo hub in Central and Eastern Europe. We also plan to open a center of excellence for services in the Balkans, further facilitating trade for the surrounding countries.”
