The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced its approval for the importation of 25,000 metric tons (MT) of frozen small pelagic fish for wet markets in the fourth quarter, according to Memorandum Order No. 17.
Of the total import allocation, 80%, equivalent to 20,000 MT, will be allocated to commercial fishing companies, while the remaining 20%, or 5,000 MT, will be awarded to fisheries associations or cooperatives.
The DA outlined the procedures for obtaining sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances (SPSICs) for fish imports, with a deadline for arrivals set no later than January 15, 2025.
Importers are required to ensure that their supply is sourced from reputable sources and not derived from illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will monitor and consolidate all imports to ensure compliance.
The distribution of the import quota among commercial fishing companies and fisheries associations will be based on their respective contributions to fish landings in previous years. Initial volumes will be allocated accordingly, with the remainder distributed proportionately.
Importers must submit complete and updated documentary requirements within seven working days from the issuance of the Certificate of Necessity to Import (CNI).
This move aims to ensure the steady supply of fish in wet markets while promoting responsible sourcing practices and supporting domestic fisheries.
