In a strategic move to bolster trade relations, the European Union (EU) is actively pursuing an expansion of agri-food exports to China, despite escalating trade tensions. EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski, during his current visit to China, underscores the imperative of strengthening food trade amidst broader economic challenges.
Wojciechowski emphasizes the absence of significant barriers for Chinese imports in the food trade, reaffirming the EU's commitment to safeguarding the agriculture sector from the repercussions of escalating trade disputes. He stresses the necessity of preventing agricultural products from bearing the brunt of challenges faced by other sectors.
The commissioner's visit coincides with growing concerns over rising protectionism, with Jens Eskelund, president of the European Chamber in China, warning of a potential trade war between China and Europe. Despite this apprehension, the EU's agri-food sector maintains an export surplus in its trade with China, distinguishing it from other industries.
Unlike sectors such as solar panels or new energy vehicles (NEVs), the agri-food sector plays a crucial role in ensuring food security globally. This significance prompted the exclusion of agri-food products from Western sanctions imposed on Russia following geopolitical tensions.
In 2023, the EU's exports to China amounted to 14.6 billion euros ($15.57 billion), with potential for further growth in various agri-food segments. Wojciechowski identifies poultry, pork, beef, and dairy as areas with considerable export potential, particularly given the rising demand for high-quality food among China's expanding middle class.
"We can observe the increase of middle class consumers who are looking for good, high-quality food. This is a chance for European Food to increase our exports," Wojciechowski remarks.
As the EU actively seeks to capitalize on opportunities in the Chinese market, fostering stronger trade ties remains a priority amidst evolving global trade dynamics.
