Vietnam aims to embark on the construction of two high-speed railway lines linking its capital, Hanoi, with China before 2030, signaling a deepening of ties between the two neighboring nations. The Ministry of Planning and Investment disclosed this strategic plan, reflecting the growing economic collaboration between the two countries.
With China standing as Vietnam's largest trading partner and a crucial source of imports for its manufacturing sector, the proposed high-speed rail lines underscore the importance of efficient transportation infrastructure for bilateral trade and connectivity. Presently, existing highways and railways between the two countries require upgrades on the Vietnamese side.
One of the envisioned high-speed lines is projected to traverse Vietnam's port cities of Haiphong and Quang Ninh, passing through Hanoi before reaching Lao Cai province, which shares a border with China's Yunnan province. The second line is planned to connect Hanoi with Lang Son province, bordering China's Guangxi region, traversing through a region rich with global manufacturing facilities.
While specific details about the projects are yet to be disclosed, Vietnam recently expressed its intent to draw from China's expertise in developing its inaugural high-speed railway network. To this end, Vietnamese officials have engaged with Chinese railway companies to exchange knowledge and explore collaboration opportunities.
The envisioned high-speed rail network complements Vietnam's ambitious plans, including the proposed construction of a massive high-speed railway line linking Hanoi with the bustling business hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
The recent visit of Vietnam's National Assembly chairman, Vuong Dinh Hue, to Beijing further signifies the strengthening ties between the two nations. During the visit, Hue met with executives of Chinese railway companies, building upon the cooperation agreements signed between Vietnam and China during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Hanoi in December.
Trade between Vietnam and China continues to flourish, with data indicating a significant 22% increase in trade volume in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year.
As Vietnam and China deepen their economic cooperation through strategic infrastructure projects, the proposed high-speed rail lines serve as a testament to the region's commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering mutual prosperity.
