The Association of Grape Producers and Exporters of the Republic of Moldova (APESM) has reported a remarkable surge in Moldova's table grape exports during the first two months of 2024. Despite a decrease in grape reserves allocated for the winter-spring season compared to previous years, Moldova exported an impressive 16.5 thousand tons of table grapes to 21 different countries.
To provide context, Moldova exported 9.6 thousand tons of grapes in January-February 2023, 18.8 thousand tons in the same period of 2022, and 14.3 thousand tons in 2021. While March exports historically range between 2-4 thousand tons, the brisk pace of exports in early 2024 suggests that March exports may remain modest, likely not exceeding 2 thousand tons.
Considering the export figures from the 2023 harvest and the current year's performance, total exports are projected to reach an unprecedented 87-88 thousand tons, marking the highest export level observed over the last five marketing years.
Financially, Moldova's table grape exports in January-February 2024 generated a total revenue of $18.5 million, with an average export price of $1.12 per kilogram, representing an increase from the previous year's average price of $0.95 per kilogram.
Market analysis conducted by EastFruit indicates a significant upward trend in wholesale prices for table grapes in Moldova since February 2024, with weekly increases ranging from 10-17%. The average price recently peaked at 24 lei per kilogram ($1.34/kg), surpassing the price level at the same time in the previous year.
