Lebanon's avocado industry is experiencing remarkable growth, with a surge in production leading to expanded exports, particularly to European markets. This surge is attributed to the adoption of international certifications and standards in avocado farming, positioning Lebanon as a significant player in the global avocado trade.
The expansion of avocado cultivation across Lebanon has facilitated exports to key destinations such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and various Eastern European countries. According to the Lebanese Avocado Association, revenues from avocado exports have soared from 40 tons in 2020 to an impressive 1,000 tons in 2023, signaling a substantial boost for both the agricultural sector and Lebanon's export economy.
Despite facing competition from American and European producers, Lebanon has maintained its status as a key exporter, particularly to Arab nations like Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and the Gulf states. In 2023 alone, the country exported approximately 9,000 tons of avocados, valued at around $15 million, reflecting a significant increase from $10 million in 2020.
Key organizations such as the Rene Moawad Foundation and the Embassy of the Netherlands have played pivotal roles in supporting Lebanon's avocado industry. Through funding agricultural development programs, these entities have empowered Lebanese farmers, enhancing their capabilities in cultivating and exporting not only avocados but also cherries and apples.
The success of Lebanon's avocado export sector underscores the importance of international trade initiatives in driving economic growth and fostering global partnerships. As Lebanon continues to capitalize on its agricultural potential, the country is poised to further strengthen its position in the international trade arena.
