Indonesia’s National Food Agency (Bapanas), under the leadership of Arief Prasetyo Adi, is making remarkable progress in positioning the country as a vital player in the global food market, particularly through its shallot exports. The successful export of shallots to Malaysia and other nations highlights Indonesia’s ability to meet international food demands while reinforcing its role in global trade.

 

Bapanas’s strategy is to ensure domestic food sufficiency first, paving the way for exports that leverage the nation’s rich agricultural resources. This proactive approach allows Indonesia to cater effectively to both local and international markets, enhancing its reputation as a reliable food supplier.

 

This vision aligns perfectly with President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to achieving food self-sufficiency within four years of his tenure, which begins on October 20. Recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture for 2019-2023 reveals that Indonesia has significantly improved its global ranking as an onion exporter, with an average annual export value of $9.46 million—an impressive increase of 44.87 percent from previous years.

 

Bapanas projects Indonesia to become a leading shallot producer, anticipating an annual output of 1.35 million tons against a consumption requirement of 1.16 million tons, indicating a healthy surplus. With approximately 3.5 million agricultural households focused on horticulture, shallots stand out as a key contributor to the vegetable sector.

 

The export potential for shallots, especially to Southeast Asia, looks promising. Thailand has emerged as the largest importer from Indonesia in 2023, with significant growth also noted in exports to Malaysia. The Indonesian Government’s successful maintenance of the Exchange Rate of Horticulture Farmers (NTPH) above 100 points signifies a positive trend in the economic performance of the horticulture sector, further bolstering the country’s trade capabilities.
